Most call about one and end up needing two. A failed inspection turns into a panel replacement. A monitoring cutover turns up a wiring fault somebody buried in 2011 and nobody has looked at since, which is the kind of thing that only surfaces when you put a meter on it.

Fire alarm inspection and testing in Hollywood
NFPA 72 puts most commercial fire alarm systems on an annual inspection and test, with shorter intervals on batteries and a handful of other components. We function-test every initiating device and notification appliance. We load-test the batteries, verify the signal actually arrives at the central station, and leave you a signed inspection and testing report in the format a Hollywood fire inspector expects to find in the panel cabinet.

Fire alarm monitoring
Copper phone lines are the reason half our monitoring calls start badly. Buildings still transmitting over two POTS lines pay premium rates for a service the carriers keep trying to retire, and every line fault becomes a trouble signal somebody has to silence. Installation, upgrades and permits
Florida Statute 553.7932 changed small jobs. An alteration of 20 or fewer initiating and notification devices goes through a simplified permit: no plans, no specifications, the permit issued within two business days of a complete application, an inspection within three business days of the request, and a 10% refund of the fee for every business day the city runs late. Hollywood publishes its own checklist for it. A contractor can start work the moment the application is submitted, so a handful of replacement smokes doesn’t sit in review for a month.
Anything larger goes to the Fire Marshal’s Office for plan review alongside the Building Division. We draw it, submit it, take the comments and see the permit through to final inspection. Nobody on your side ends up chasing a plans examiner.
Condominiums and high-rise buildings
Hollywood had 153,067 residents at the 2020 census, third largest city in Broward County, and plenty of them live in towers along A1A and the Intracoastal. Those buildings carry the awkward jobs. A 1970s panel nobody makes parts for. Addressable devices spliced onto a conventional loop by a previous contractor. A fire command center that fails on the elevator recall test. We phase this work so the building is never left unprotected overnight and the association isn’t paying for a fire watch it didn’t budget for.
What the salt air does to a fire alarm system
Buildings within a few blocks of the ocean age differently. Faster, mostly. We pull smoke detectors off ceilings in beachfront condos that look fine from the floor and are green inside the housing. Conduit fittings corrode, screw terminals lose their bite, and horn strobes on open-air walkways give up years before the ones in an interior corridor.
None of that shows up on a walk-through. It shows up as an intermittent trouble at 3am that clears before anyone gets there, then comes back the following week. If your building sits east of Federal Highway and your devices are past ten years old, budget for replacement rather than repair.
The buildings we work in around Hollywood
Condo towers along A1A and the Intracoastal are the biggest share. After that it’s hotels on and behind the Broadwalk, restaurants around Young Circle and Hollywood Boulevard, medical offices near Memorial Regional, schools, and warehouse and light industrial space out west of I-95 toward the Turnpike.
Each has its own failure mode. Restaurants kill detectors with grease and steam. Warehouses have dust and forklift damage. Hotels have guests who pull stations. Schools get inspected harder than anything else in the city. We quote against what the building actually is rather than a square-footage table.
BDA and ERRCS radio coverage
Under Florida Statute 633.202(18), existing high-rise buildings had to meet minimum radio signal strength for first responders by 1 January 2025. The permit application was due a year before that. Both dates are behind us. A building cited today gets at least a year to finish the retrofit, so this is survivable, but the clock starts with a violation on file rather than with a plan of your own.
Broward is stricter than most counties about how these get approved. The Board of Rules and Appeals guidelines call for 99% coverage in critical areas: the fire command center, pump rooms, exit stairs, elevator lobbies and sprinkler valve locations. The system can’t be energized, testing included, until the FCC license holder gives written authorization. Five separate sign-offs stand between an installed amplifier and a certificate of occupancy. The 8th Edition Florida Fire Prevention Code, adopted 31 December 2023 and built on the 2021 editions of NFPA 1 and NFPA 101. The 9th Edition went to rule hearing in July 2026 and isn’t in force yet, and on top of the state code sit the local amendments from the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals.
Does my building need a BDA?
If it’s a high-rise, the compliance deadline passed on 1 January 2025. The only way to know for certain is a signal strength survey, which we run against the county thresholds before quoting anything.
